500 teachers to debate future of education and teaching at Wexford Convention

500 second-level teachers from all over the country will gather to discuss the future of education and teaching in Ireland at the 2023 ASTI Annual Convention in Wexford from April 11th to 13th.

The event will take place in Clayton Whites Hotel, Wexford, and will be addressed by ASTI President Miriam Duggan and Minister for Education Norma Foley on Tuesday, April 11th.

Senior Cycle education and the Leaving Cert, the lack of investment in schools, and the need to address teacher shortages by ensuring teaching is a viable career option will be debated over the three days.

Ireland has a high performing and trusted second-level education system, as affirmed by national and international research and evidence. Delegates at ASTI Annual Convention will stress that re-development of the Senior Cycle and the Leaving Cert must build upon:

  • Existing high standards in education,
  • Fairness and equity for students,
  • Trust in the state exams system.

Debates on class size and education for students with special educational needs will explore what resources are needed in schools in order to improve students’ experience of second-level education.

ASTI members will highlight Ireland’s poor track record for investment in education which has resulted in overcrowded classes for students and insufficient personnel and other resources.

A number of motions at this year’s ASTI Annual Convention reflect the concerns of teachers that teacher workload and work intensity are increasingly having a negative impact on teaching and learning.
