A Cork teacher will receive the 2018 ASTI Honorary Life Membership Award in recognition of her exceptional service to the union at a reception in Dublin tonight.
Máire G. Ní Chiarba formerly a teacher at Coláiste an Phiarsaigh, Glanmire, Co. Cork has been active in the ASTI since 1978.
She served as school steward and later became the first female Chairperson of Cork North ASTI Branch in 1997 having previously served in a number of roles including secretary, treasurer and vice-chair. Máire G. has been a member of ASTI Central Executive Council for most of her teaching life. She also served on a number of national committees including Education Committee and Steering Committee and in 2013 was elected to represent Fermoy, Cork North, East Cork, West Waterford and Dungarvan branches on ASTI Standing Committee. She was elected ASTI Vice President in 2014 and served as President from 2015-2016.
Honorary Life Membership is the most prestigious award that can be bestowed on an ASTI member. It is given in recognition of singular and exceptional service to the ASTI involving substantial and commendable personal input.
Máire G. will be presented with her award by ASTI President Ger Curtin.
