A Listowel teacher will receive a 2017 ASTI Achievement Award for his outstanding contribution outside the classroom at a reception in Dublin tonight (Friday, May 26th).
John Mulvihill, Principal of St. Michael’s College, Listowel, Co. Kerry will be presented with the 2017 ASTI Achievement Award for to his outstanding contribution to Gaelic football both in his school and his community.
John holds two Senior All Ireland medals for Kerry as well as All Ireland titles at minor and U21 level. He has also won two county championships with his club Feale Rangers. In his community John helped establish the North Kerry School of Excellence to prepare young players to represent Kerry at minor level. John has also contributed to GAA at a management level, as a selector for Kerry and as manager for local teams Feale Rangers and Listowel Emmets. He has also coached many school teams over the years and many of his past pupils went on to success at inter-county level.
The ASTI Achievement Awards are presented annually to honour teachers who not only play an important professional role in their schools, but whose talent, commitment and determination enables them and/ or their students to excel in areas such as sport, literature and music.
The Achievement Award will be presented to John by ASTI General Secretary Kieran Christie.
Speaking today, Mr Christie said: “The work of teachers in the classroom is well documented. The Achievement Awards give us the opportunity to acknowledge the often hidden contributions of teachers outside the classroom. Look at any GAA club, soccer club, drama group, charity, political party or any community-based activity and you will find teachers. Achievement Award winners are exceptional people who have made a significant contribution to their schools, their communities and to society.”
John is one of two teachers to receive a 2017 ASTI Achievement Award. The other teacher is Don Thornton from Drogheda who has undertaken a 10km run every day for a year in support of the Alzheimer’s Society of Ireland.
