TUI Dispute Action

The Teachers Union of Ireland has announced one day of strike action regarding the on-going pay inequality issue on Tuesday 4th February, 2020. ASTI members will not be on strike on that date. This is because the ASTI began its campaign for pay parity much earlier and with more vigour and focus than any other public sector union, several years ago. We are further advanced in achieving an end to this shocking stain that has afflicted the teaching profession.

Members will be aware that the Minister for Education and Skills, Joe McHugh T.D. published the Education (Student and Parent Charter) Bill, 2019 on 10th September 2019. The ASTI has a number of key concerns regarding the provisions of this Bill.

Teaching Council Elections 2020

The term of office of registered teachers who were elected to the current Teaching Council comes to an end in April 2020. The Council has 37 members and 16 of these are teachers who are elected by teachers. An election for teacher members will be held in February/March 2020.

The ASTI is supporting Fórsa’s industrial action in pursuit of improved pay and conditions for school secretaries who are paid through the Ancillary Services Grant system.

ASTI directive on SLAR meetings

In November 2019 the ASTI conducted a ballot of members on the scheduling of Subject Learning and Assessment Review (SLAR) meetings. ASTI members voted by 93% to 7% in favour of authorising Standing Committee to issue a directive to members to only attend SLAR meetings held in accordance with the provisions of section 9.7 of the Appendix to Joint Statement on Principles and Implementation on Junior Cycle Reform.
